Lafayette County

Lafayette County is located in North Central Florida, midway between Tallahassee to the northwest and Gainesville to the southeast. US Highway 27 is the major transportation route through the county. The county has a land area of 548 square miles, most of which is timber and farmland. Lafayette County was created in 1856 and named in honor of Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who fought with and aided the American Army during the American Revolutionary War.

While Lafayette County is one of the least populated counties in the state, it has experienced steady population growth since 2000. Current population estimates place just over 8,000 residents in Lafayette County.  Primary private sector employers are in the corrections, healthcare, and agricultural products industries.
